I grew up surrounded by 'tatty bits.' While other parents were ordering the latest built in wardrobes from the 'Santa Fe' range at MFI, my Dad was fashioning kitchen units from old mahogany shop counters. No brand new sofa for us from Fishpools and why would you when an Edwardian three piece suit, £10 from an auction would do the job? The chintz pattern was gorgeous and it was bloody comfortable too.
I was no stranger to antiques shops as a child either. They were places of wonderment for me, full of unusual and beautiful items. Our house was full of the weird and wonderful and I think you can safely say my Dad has hoarder tendencies. When my parents decided to downsize and selling the family home a few years ago, one prospective buyer called it a museum!
Some of the items that didn't make the move now proudly reside in my home, including my grandmother’s Art Deco chair and mirror. They sit alongside an eclectic mix of 1920s to 1970s pieces.
It's therefore no surprise as to where my love for all things old, beautiful and peculiar comes from. It's the inspiration for my vintage business, Tatty Bits which is very much a family affair. Mum is the designated driver as we tout our vintage wares at fairs all over London. Dad's DIY skills come in handy too when a light needs re-wiring or a piece of furniture needs repairing.
I’ve been running Tatty Bits for over six years and I’ve always wanted to run my own vintage fair. When the opportunity arose to work with the Palmers Green Action Team I jumped at the chance.
Like me they are passionate about reviving our beleaguered high street and they have been fantastic in helping to get PG Vintage Flea off the ground.
I can’t wait for it all to come together on 16th-17th November. See you there!
